logogbangaHere is the first part of our interview with Philipp, which focuses on the background and gameplay of “Gbanga”.

What is the background and theme of your MMTRG “Gbanga”?

Gbanga is a game with a variety of possible scenarios. These scenarios can be created by the players. So Jack Bauer, Captain Future and Barbie may meet each other to share information in order to serve their respective quests. Thus, the player interacts with other gamers in the vicinity. As it is location-based, the Gbanga world is strongly linked to the real world, e.g. local time, seasonal changes or temperature. So real-world clues are as important to the player as virtual events.

What can be done in “Gbanga”?

Think of Gbanga as a playground that is open to everybody. This playground provides certain functions such as a map and an instant messenger service. Additionally, there are a few rules to hold everything together. In Gbanga, you will interact with players and NPCs in many ways - similar to other MMOGs. However, as in real life, your actions will always influence your surroundings.

What kind of battles do you expect? player vs. player, player vs. building, …

Since it is the players who decide how they want to play, there may be no battle at all. You will not be forced to fight. There are many other ways to play and compete with your teammates, e.g. with mini games. Players can challenge each other in digital matches or compete for treasures. Or they can build real-world groups and act as a joint force. We like to see lots of people playing with each other remotely or in the same real-world location.

Can you tell us more about crafting, treasures and quests?

We are introducing something completely new, where players can create their own quests. And by that we mean not only level and characters editors. You will have full access to everything. The powerful webservice API we provide, is used by our quest designers, too.

These homemade quests are very important in Gbanga. It is key for gaining points and progressing on to new challenges. To solve a specific quest, which can be influenced and even changed through teammates or opponents, you will have to relocate to real places, deal with real people and leave your mark in the world. For example, you have to find a virtual treasure, which can be an information or a code that gives you a real world benefit. You will have to combine elements to gain useful information and skills.

Crafting is possible through a collecting and constructing mechanism where players mine and collect goods and combine them in their inventory to build new infrastructures and other objects.
